Between the Music Notes...
with Charlotte Martin
Piano playing singer-songwriter Charlotte Martin has come into the spotlight with her gorgeous debut, On Your Shore (RCA). A classically trained pianist and with a degree in Opera, Martin presents a truly enthralling performance each time she takes a seat at the piano and her hands grace the keys, her voice further fortifying the melodies. Martin took some time out of her busy touring schedule to give her insights on listening to music, and to present you, the listener, with a challenge.
Nicole said I could say anything...so that is a pretty broad topic.
I can tell you what anything means to me today. I have been reading
a lot about the art and skill of listening (to music). There are so
many different levels of listening. Music can be just noise that I hear
everywhere, so easy to tune it out if I don't like it. Sometimes
I like to put it on just for mood and vibe. Then other times I listen for
just structures of rhythm, harmonics, and form, which I did a lot of in
college because that was my major. Then other times I’ll listen to
songs for only lyrics. I realize over the years as a listener, that once I digest
all these levels I really fully understand the piece, work or song.
I'm way into exploring all of these levels. Thanks to a friend of mine,
who has reintroduced me to my past studies through amazing books and
articles, I'm obsessed.
I guess I'm bringing it up because my listeners
themselves are extremely open and educated and I am so happy
that they can hear what I do on these many levels and they are moved.
We all connect with music different ways, through different mediums.
This is a challenge. Pick a new record or even just a song.
Get out a piece of paper. Try to pick out all the different instruments,
lyrics, theme, melody…or just listen for your favorite parts, mood.
After you dissect your piece, wait a couple days...and then listen again.
It will hit you harder and it will mean more.
Trust me.
