Milwaukee, WI – January 2nd, 2004
Pabst Theater
Review by: Shannon Robinson
This show lived up to all of my expectations; it was amazing, energetic, and worth the money! The openers for the show were Michael Tolcher and Ingram Hill.
Michael did his usual set (Mission Responsible, Sooner or Later, Kiss and Tell, Miracle, Waiting, This Is What I Mean By That, Bad Habits, and mixed in a little Buffalo Springfield “For What It’s Worth”.) He had a lot of energy and made the crowd get into it (even if they didn’t want to). He was fun to watch!
Ingram Hill did a great job as well. I was very new to them but I loved what I heard. They played their radio hit “Will I Ever Make It Home”, “On My Way”, “What If I’m Right”(a song I took a liking to), “Hangin’ Around Again”, “Almost Perfect, “Never Be The Same”, and a cover of Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds”, with the lead singer, Justin Moore, channeling that Elvis flair with the hip shaking and hand motions. They were also very energetic and their music is very easy to feel and relate with. They are amazing live performers.
After an intermission, the stage was then set up for Gavin DeGraw. He is famous for his live shows and this show was no different. It was full of just good feelings and energy. I was really into his. He did songs from “Chariot” such as “Just Friends, “Belief”, “More Then Anyone”, “Follow Through”, “Overrated”, his radio hit “I Don’t Wanna Be”, “Nice to Meet You (Anyway)”, “Meaning”, “Chemical Party” (with a mix of “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” by the Temptations and “Proud Mary” by Ike & Tina Turner). He also sang “Crush”.
He also sang a cover of “Midnight Rider” by the Allman Brothers with some “Paradise City” by Guns-N-Roses and “American Pie” by Don McLean. I have never seen any performer do justice to covers as Gavin DeGraw did. He is just an unbelievable talent. He did sing three unreleased songs, “Cop Stop”, “Yesterday”, and “Relative.”
For his encore, Gavin sang a cover of Smokey Robinson’s “Tracks of My Tears” with a mix of Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready” and Sam Cooke’s “Cupid”.
A highlight of the show was when a guy named Adam (who had met Gavin earlier in the day and was from St. Louis) proposed to his girlfriend on stage. It was so sweet and just touching! Gavin had a huge smile on his face and I think he felt really good about helping the guy out with that. He sung “Meaning” to them, which matched the occasion perfectly.
All in all, the show was fantastic. The Pabst Theater is just beautiful and was the perfect setting for this show. The openers were great and I left feeling with a sense of just happiness. Gavin, Michael, and Ingram Hill are a force to be reckoned with!
