Michael Tolcher
I Am
By: Cassie McCombs
"Until it ends, the story is unfolding" states the insert of Michael Tolcher's debut album, "I Am". The quote explains the storyline of a struggle with personal development which is the underlying theme in the songs on Tolcher's debut. His first CD speaks of life experience and poetry, and it’s obvious Tolcher has a lot to say with his metaphors and monologues. The young singer-songwriter completely authors all the songs on the CD—a breath of fresh air in today's conglomerate industry.
Pieces like the first single "Mission Responsible" and "Sooner or Later" deliver lessons about life with introspective lyrics and memorable rhythms. "This Is What I Mean By That" is an attempt at explaining the male psyche; a genuine song that deserves intent listening.
The title track, "I Am" seems to be a better explanation for occasionally inappropriate behavior in a relationship, geared toward “Taxi Ride Kinda Night” and “Kiss and Tell” which display Tolcher’s fun and flirtatious side. Both songs are laid with funky rhythms and the consistently original lyrics.
“Miracle” is an inspiring piece that begs people to reevaluate their current situations and let the cards fall where they may. The final song on the CD, “Waiting” is by far the most rock-influenced track. With a great chemistry, Tolcher and his band mates put every ounce of energy they possess into their music, which is evident on this debut release.
