ashes.are.nutritious

EP

By Sharon Chapman

ashes.are.nutritious captures your attention in a variety of ways.  First of all there is the unusual name, which causes spellchecker programs to go absolutely bonkers.  Then there is the group’s humorous website at www.ashesarenutritious.com, which will pique your interest even if it doesn’t provide such basic information as the band members’ last names.  However, and most important, there is the music, which shows that this is not a novelty act.  This band can play!

The four-man band came together in South Amboy, New Jersey in 2004 – Bill on vocals; Craig on drums; Gianni on bass; and Paul on guitar.  ashes.are.nutritious’ self-titled  EP features innovative music that will vary from softly melodic to screaming intensity and back again, even within one song.  The complex time signatures, strong vocals, and talented musicianship give this disc a clean and hard-edged sound.  This is serious listening for those who prefer enjoying interesting music instead of categorizing it.

While this is only a 3-song recording, it’s an effective appetizer that will make you want to nosh on something even more nutritious from this group in the future.
